The story of the best known and first-ever plus size clothing retailer, RedCats USA, known until 2004 as Brylane, is the story of a young Lithuanian immigrant, Lena Bryant, who in 1901 started the firm. Bryant's husband died leaving her financially destitute. From money acquired with the sale of her diamond earrings, Bryant bought a sewing machine and started her dressing making business. Her plus size clothing beginnings was in the design and creation of wedding gowns. They she had an inspiration that resulted in her much lauded "number five" maternity tea dress. This instant success was the start of the biggest plus size catalog firm in the industry.

Lane Bryant is the flagship brand of the Redcats USA plus size clothing empire. It is noted for comfortable sportswear reasonably priced. The Limited Inc. bought Lane Bryant in 1981, relaunching the catalog division as Brylane, which in 2004 was renamed Redcats USA.

In 1907 Lerner Shops premiered its plus size clothing shops on Manhattan's 7th Avenue, focusing on clothing that plus size women could wear to the office and then out on the town at night. In 1985 Lerner became part of the Limited Inc. and the plus size clothing catalog division of Lerner shops debuted. One of the most popular Lerner shop plus size clothing types are suits and dresses with style and flair.

Roaman's plus size clothing was founded in 1932. This retail chain, centered on women who wanted to look great in spite of obesity, began on Manhattan's fifth avenue right across the street from Lord & Taylor. The success of this plus size clothing line was so popular that its expansion finally totaled 50 stores. Redcats USA acquired this second most popular plus size clothing catalog in 1982.

Catherine's offers plus size clothing at moderate prices in various U.S. retail locations and from its online and print catalog. Its styles focus on classic lines for both casual and career clothing needs of plus size women. Catherines Stores Corporation owns in excess of 400 stores in the United States in all but 6 of the contiguous states. Not only does the Catherine's line of plus size clothing provide fashionable items in sizes 16 to 24, but it also offers petite lengths as well in sizes up to 26.

Catherine's clothing for women struggling with obesity began in Memphis Tennessee in 1960. This single store was owned by Catherine Weaver, who struggled with obesity herself. As her concept showed a profit she opened numerous stores throughout the Southeastern part of the United States. Investors purchased Catherine's shortly afterwards, calling the retail locations Stout Shoppes. Catherine's Inc. debuted at the same time.

By 1980 this plus size clothing manufacturer had a grand opening for its 100th store. In 1991 the firm went public as Catherines Stores Corporation. In 2000 Catherines became part of Charming Shoppes Inc.

Catherines Stores Corporation is a plus size clothing company that takes pride in saying it is for women and managed by women. It is noted for its superb customer service and its comfy retail environment.

Just this June the first Catherine's outlet store for plus size clothing opened in the Franklin Mills outlet center in Philadelphia. One week later three additional Catherine's stores premiered. They are located in Colorado Mills Mall in Lakewood Colorado; The Shops at Las Americas in San Ysidro California and Gurnee Mills outlet mall in Gurnee Mills Illinois.

While plus size clothing is prevalent nowadays for adults – especially adult women – it’s extremely difficult to find for children...

While plus size clothing is prevalent nowadays for adults – especially adult women – it’s extremely difficult to find for children. What’s not well understood is just how many overweight children there are and how vast the children’s plus size clothing market it.

Newsweek recently reported that about 13 percent of children under 18 are overweight or even suffering from obesity, as opposed to the five percent that were overweight in 1964. The report also stated an expectation for this trend to accelerate, with an expectation that one in three children will be overweight in the coming years.

Of course, the ideal is for these children to lose weight but this happens at a slow pace and in the meantime they suffer from harassment, and prejudice from peers and even adults.

Children’s obesity and image experts recommend that parents not let their overweight children hide out in oversized sweatshirts or T-shirts and baggy pants. These, say the experts, are not flattering, not socially cool for them, and just look sloppy. Their recommendation for plus size clothing for these kids is flare or boot cut pants. While children should be able to pick their own styles and colors to a large extent, their choices should be flattering too. Bare midriffs, a-la-Britney-spears won’t look good on a young girl suffering from obesity.

If kids are trying to be cool there are many cool accessories they can don even wearing plus size clothing. Jewelry, shoes, purses, backpacks and so forth are available no matter what their size. Because larger and fuller plus size clothing can look sloppier at times, it is important that children who are overweight or suffering from obesity keep their plus size clothing clean, free of rips and tears, and ironed. This will help their self image.

Just because a woman is into plus size clothing doesn’t mean her wardrobe has to be serviceable and not sexy. There are slinky night gowns, sexy teddies, black lace corset and even some naughty French maid outfits to be found online in the shops of sexy plus size clothing merchants.

One plus size clothing merchant we found online had a variety of sexy garb, that included a black and white playboy bunny dress with tail attached, a matching collar, white cuffs and sexy rabbit ears. This outfit was $49. Another of the naughty plus size wardrobes was a white spandex sexy school girl get up with a low cut white spandex top with a front tie, and a very short polyester and cotton plaid skirt with a Velcro closure. This plus size sexy clothing outfit also comes with white stretch stockings with stay-up elastic and a ruffled panty in a Brazilian cut. The cost to don these “learning curves” was $66.

The nurse’s costume in this sexy plus size clothing online catalog has a plunging neckline with underwire that will drive him wild. It includes a stretch satin white dress with cap sleeves and a zip front, a nurse’s cap and a stethoscope. The price for nursing him back to health in this outfit is $57.

One of the best sexy plus size clothing sellers is a French maid costume. This seven piece outfit can be purchased in black or red and includes a removable apron skirt, a teddiette with thong panty and cut out back, wristlets, a white choker, white garter, white stockings and white hairpiece. It retails for $66.

If a mother to be has a limited wardrobe she can opt for a number of maternity clothes that are so versatile they can be worn after the pregnancy. A drawstring waist, for example, is very popular for this reason. This handy option is great for the early pregnancy, when other maternity clothes aren’t really needed as yet. It can expand throughout the pregnancy too, and then be worn after the baby is born and as mom loses that baby fat and returns to her pre-pregnancy slim and trim self.

Other maternity clothes are those whose fabric is very resilient and which don’t have a maternity panel. These styles have a zipper fly front with a top button

What are very trendy now in maternity clothes are those that hug the body and show off what’s left of the expectant mother’s slim shape. The belly is shown off, rather than hidden under a lot of cloth. Tunic length tops aren’t nearly as popular as in decades past. Tops fall just below, or even right above, the belly. Maternity clothes include camisoles and tank that fit like a glove and have spaghetti taps. They can be worn by themselves or with jackets or blouses over them. Maternity clothes nowadays include pants with a slim fit and ankle length.
The most important pieces of a wardrobe of maternity clothes that will carry the expectant mother through her pregnancy are basic that can be worn with several other things for different looks. These include a quality pair of black pants, a black skirt either shirt or long, and a part of pants that are made of either twill or denim.

While some mothers can make do with a few versatile maternity clothes that can be mixed and matched throughout their entire pregnancy, others have jobs that require a sleek classic professional look...

While some mothers can make do with a few versatile maternity clothes that can be mixed and matched throughout their entire pregnancy, others have jobs that require a sleek classic professional look. That can be harder to find in standard maternity clothes catalogs and shops. The same can be true of evening and formal wear. It may be that the favorite maternity clothes merchandiser has these great looking skirt or pants suits, or evening gowns but the cost seems silly and prohibitive for something that can only be worn a few times. In the case of the evening wear, the fancy maternity clothes for that night on the town might be worn once and then discarded.

Rather than spending a bundle on these seldom worn maternity clothes, a professional mother to be might consider leasing these maternity wardrobe items. There are a few maternity clothes merchants online that lease suits, business wear, formal wear such as holiday ball gowns, jeans and even bathing suites. Generally these maternity clothes can be lease for one special occasion, or a month at a time. The maternity clothes leasing service usually includes dry cleaning and the cost of return postage if not local.

The best part about leasing maternity clothes is that the wardrobe can be returned at any point and replaced by one more in tune with the needs of the new season, or the new shape of the growing mother to be’s body. Or mom can buy maternity clothes basics online or locally and just lease those not versatile enough to be worn over and over again, or a style that can convert back to pre-pregnancy wear.

Women in America are larger than in past decades and plus size clothing manufacturers, realizing this, have spent the last five years ramping up their marketing efforts...

Women in America are larger than in past decades and plus size clothing manufacturers, realizing this, have spent the last five years ramping up their marketing efforts. According to a recent study completed by research firm Mintel, nearly $32 billion was spent on plus size clothing in 2005. The growth in the plus size clothing market in the last five years has exceeded 50 percent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control 62 percent of U.S. women are overweight or suffer from obesity. Research indicates an expected 10 percent plus size clothing market growth in the next decade.

More than half of the respondents in the Mintel study said they buy plus size clothing. The biggest group of plus size clothing providers is online catalog merchants such as Brylane, home of Lane Bryant and Roamans. Local and national retail chains are also starting to jump on the plus size clothing bandwagon as well, with retailers such as Kohl's and Penny's expanding their noted label products to include larger sizes.

Plus size clothing fashion and design options are expansive - much more so than a decade or so ago. For many years, women have had to shop from a very limited selection of plus size clothing. Now the styles are more flattering and more diverse, the manufacturer's distributions are wider and the plus size clothing products are mass merchandised like never before.

Celebrities such as Oprah and Queen Latifah as well as comedian Mo'Nique have championed the acceptability of the plus size clothing industry. In 2005 Mo'nique introduced the first annual plus size beauty pageant, which was televised nationally. It has become clear to these manufacturers that obesity is lucrative, as women with the money to spend on looking fashionable flock to plus size clothing stores, departments and catalogs.

For today’s mom to be the maternity clothes selection is extensive – unlike decades past when gingham and bows were the only maternity clothes options.

Shopping for maternity clothes can be a daunting task for a new mother to be. The rule of thumb is to look for maternity clothes in the same size that has been worn pre-pregnancy. Maternity clothes are designed to be roomier in the bust as well as the belly. About the only time a woman might need the next bigger size is if she is expecting twins or has had extra large babies in the past – 9 pounds or more.

Maternity clothes should be pretty basic, made of stretch fabrics such as cotton jersey and some spandex.

Buy no more than two maternity bras at one time because it is very possible for the mother to be to gradually grow several bra and cup sizes over the course of her pregnancy. An expectant mother who is going to breastfeed should not buy nursing bras until the 8th month. ?

Most pregnant women don’t want to spend money on a ton of maternity clothes and outfits so find themselves wearing the same few things over and over again for several months. It’s important that the mom-to-be pamper herself with at least one fun outfit that makes her feel great. It might be some fancy evening dress that fits tightly around the oversized belly or a really cool pair of evening pants.
?
When the mom-to-be is ready for the trip to the hospital the only clothes she should bring are maternity clothes. First time mothers tend to think once the baby is born they’ll be back in their pre-pregnancy clothes. That, however, is not the case for a while after taking the newborn baby home.

One of the most universal pieces of clothing are jeans. When you are plus sized, it can be hard to find jeans that are both stylish and comfortable...

One of the most universal pieces of clothing are jeans. When you are plus sized, it can be hard to find jeans that are both stylish and comfortable. Most jeans either are too tight in the leg area or cut into the tummy area. However, there are plus size clothing companies out there that make great jeans. You just have to look for them!

The first thing you should always look for in your jeans is “stretch”. Many pairs of jeans will say they are made of stretch material, which means the material will give a little. You may not really think they give much, but they will stretch out more as you wear them. You may even have to give them a few hours before they get really comfortable. Going with stretch jeans will make you feel more comfortable throughout the day.

The next thing you should look for is mid rise qualities. Many jeans these days are being made as low rise jeans. This is a great look if you have no curves at all. But, plus size clothing should not be low rise. Mid rise is much more appealing and attractive. It will help you stay stylish while also allowing you to stay covered and comfortable.

When you do find the perfect pair of jeans, it is always worth it to buy an extra pair. After all, what are the chances you will run across the same pair of perfect jeans again?
So, look for the stretch fabric and mid rise quality when you are shopping for plus size clothing and jeans. You will be a lot happier when you look and feel great!

When you are a pregnant woman who needs plus size maternity clothes, buying an outfit can be difficult...

When you are a pregnant woman who needs plus size maternity clothes, buying an outfit can be difficult. You can often find maternity clothes large enough at your local maternity store, but you may find as you get further along in your pregnancy that things stop fitting as well. There are several things you can do.

First, you may want to consider looking online. When you search for maternity clothing, be sure to also search for plus sizes at the same time. This should allow you to bring up sites that sell maternity clothing for curvy women. After all, if you are curvy when you get pregnant, you are going to be curvy throughout the pregnancy. You are likely to find the biggest selection online, so go ahead and take the time to look.
Maternity clothes are typically sized as you would normally wear them. For instance, if you are normally a 22W, the maternity clothes you need will be sized 22W as well, even though you are growing. They should fit as long as you go by your typical size. Now, if you have gained an incredible amount of weight, they may not fit. But overall, they should be fine and you might even have room to grow some in them.

Remember that since you are only going to be using your maternity clothes for a short period of time in your life, you may want to limit what you purchase. Buy pieces that work together. Also keep in mind that if you can find things that can go from the office to home, without effort, you will save yourself money in the long run.
